MHI – Medicare Myth: My Medicare card will come automatically in the mail. All I need to do is wait for it

Posted by MedEd at MHI
You might be waiting for an awfully long time. Some people will automatically receive their Medicare card in the mail. The rest of us will actually have to take some action to get our Medicare cards.

If you receive a monthly payment from SSA as you approach your 65th birthday, your card will come automatically in the mail about three months before your Medicare effective date. This applies whether your SSA payment is based on early retirement or Medicare disability.

Anyone not receiving SSA payments at age 65 must reach out to SSA when they are ready to enroll in Medicare. Enrollment can be done online at www.ssa.gov, by telephone at 1-800-772-1213 or by making an appointment at their local Social Security office.
