MHI – Should I check my Medicare Supplement during the Open Enrollment Period?

Posted by MedEd at MHI
A: It is not necessary to check your supplement plan during the October 15 – December 7 Medicare Open Enrollment Period (OEP). The coverage provided by your supplement plan does not change from one year to the next.

It’s your prescription drug coverage that may change each year. This applies to “standalone” Part D plans purchased to go along with Medicare Supplement plans and to Medicare Advantage plans that include drug coverage. Plans may change which drugs are included on their formulary, premiums, deductibles, copays and pharmacy networks. The drug plan that worked well for you this year may not work well for you next year.

Make a point of doing a drug plan comparison on www.medicare.gov each year doing OEP. If you need help, call the State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) at 1-877-807-0044 or Medicare at 1-800-633-4227.
