MHI – Q: Are there some drugs that Medicare Part D does not cover?

Posted by MedEd at MHI
A: Part D plans don’t cover medications covered by Part A or Part B. You must have a prescription for the drug; over-the-counter (OTC) drugs are not covered.

Even if prescribed by a physician, Part D plans will not cover medicines used for weight gain or loss, relief of cough or colds, hair growth, and erectile dysfunction. Prescription vitamins are excluded from coverage as well, although there are limited exceptions for prenatal vitamins.

Note: you may find an exception to the above if you have an enhanced Part D plan rather than a basic Part D plan.
