MHI – Q: Are there some medications not covered by Part D?

Posted by MedEd at MHI
A: There are some medications not covered by Part D plans.

Medicines covered by Part A or Part B won’t be covered by Part D. Any medications you get while in the hospital as an inpatient or in a skilled care facility are covered by Part A. Part B medicines that are administered through a piece of durable medical equipment such as nebulizers or insulin pumps.

Other categories of medications not covered include the following:

Vitamins and supplements
OTC (over-the-counter) medications
Drugs for cosmetic purposes or hair growth
Fertility drugs
Drugs for erectile dysfunction

Having said that, you still have time left in the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) to do a drug plan comparison on www.medicare.gov. This is your once-a year-opportunity to make sure the plan you have this year will work for you next year. Call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227 if you need help
