MHI – Q: What is a Medication Therapy Management (MTM) program?

Posted by MedEd at MHI
A: Medication Therapy Management (MTM) programs sponsored by Part D drug plans target members who take medications for multiple chronic diseases. MTM programs teach members how to maximize the benefit of their medications through a comprehensive medication review with a healthcare professional.

Each drug plan designs their own MTM program, subject to CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) guidelines. Programs address diseases such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, Alzheimer’s disease and chronic heart failure (CHF). Members are automatically enrolled their plan’s MTM program once they meet their plan’s specific guidelines and have spent $3,919 in annual drug costs (2017).

Although you can opt out of your plan’s MTM program, consider taking advantage of it. There is no additional charge for this program and it just may do you some good!
